Polymer Fuel Cells

Microporous SOLUPOR® with high porosity has excellent mechanical strength and is therefore available with low thickness. This combination of a thin film with high porosity and mechanical strength makes SOLUPOR® an excellent substrate or carrier for functional materials. In most cases such functional layers have a membrane function, and therefore need to be thin in order to achieve high flux or high conductivity. Usually thin membranes consisting of 100% functional materials do not have sufficient mechanical strength for processing by manufacturing equipment.

A further advantage of SOLUPOR® for this type of applications is its special morphology of layers of fibrilar structures with open space between these layers, thus creating high absorption rates for liquids and solutions.

A process has been developed to make composite membranes for Polymer Fuel Cells (PEMFC). The process is very flexible and allows the use of almost all ionomers.

SOLUPOR® Is Our Answer To Important Needs Of The PEMFC Industry

  • Cost reduction (material cost, suitable for large scale manufacturing)
  • Increased performance (low resistance, open cell voltage, power/energy density)
  • Longer life (dimensional stability of the SOLUPOR® "container")
